Ari Lennox was born March 26, 1991, in Washington, D.C. She expressed interest in music at an early age, and after high school, she began uploading songs and covers on SoundCloud and YouTube in hopes that someone important in the music industry would stumble across her work. On October 22, 2013, she released her first EP called Ariography, for free.
In 2014, the rapper Omen who is signed to Dreamville records came across Ari’s music and reached out to her to collaborate. They teamed up to create the song “Sweat It Out,” which garnered the attention of Dreamville founders, rapper J.Cole, and his manager Ibrahim Hamad (IB).
Ari had just begun working at a storage facility when she received a call by Dreamville Records, and they wanted to arrange a meeting with her. She met with Cole and IB in May 2015, and later that year, it was announced that she signed to Dreamville Records, as their first and only female artist.
On October 21, 2016, Ari released her second EP called Pho under Dreamville, and the only feature on the album is from Cozz who is her labelmate. I’ve listened to this 7-track EP front and back at least 20 times, and I often find myself humming the words to her songs unconsciously throughout the day.
